Frequently Asked Questions
Stone & Steel is here to make your construction project run smoothly. Here is a list of our most commonly asked questions and information on the design, fabrication, install and care of your new countertops.
What is the difference between Quartz, Granite, and Quartzite?
The main difference is that granite and quartzite are natural stone, and quartz is man-made of natural stone aggregate mixed with resins and is non-porous. All have many great characteristics and can be installed in various spaces. Granite and Quartzite & Quartz countertops come with a 1-year warranty on our services. Quartz countertops come with a manufacturer warranty on the product ranging from 10 years - lifetime. Quartz is NEVER recommended to be installed outdoors.
Do countertops need to be sealed?
Natural stone is porous and requires sealing to help resist stains. We apply a penetrating sealer during installation. Depending on usage, we recommend resealing approximately once a year. Unlike natural stone such as Granite and Quartzite- Quartz is a non-porous material that does not need to be sealed.
What are the tiny hairline cracks or holes on the surface of my natural stone?
Natural Stone, which is crystalline in structure, sometimes has natural fissures and tiny pits which may look like cracks, but are not structural defects and are a naturally occurring result of the immense heat and pressure that formed them. These characteristics are part of the natural beauty of stone and will not impair the function or durability of the material. A product of nature cannot be expected to look completely flawless and they will not impair the function or durability of the material.
Can I put pots and pans on my new countertops?
While many natural stones and quartz are heat-resistant, we always recommend using a trivet or hot pad to protect the surface from extreme temperature changes, which can cause damage.
Will there be seams in my countertop?
Seams may be necessary depending on the slab size, the overall layout of your countertop, and the dimensions of your space. Our team meticulously matches the grain and color variations to ensure seams are as inconspicuous as possible.

How do I clean my new countertops?
For daily cleaning, use a mild, pH-neutral cleaner, stone soap, or a few drops of mild dish soap and warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals, acidic cleaners (like vinegar or lemon), and abrasive scouring powders, as these can damage the finish or etch the stone.
